BOWLS - KEEPING YOU HEALTHY
Bowls gives your muscles and joints good exercise and keeps the tendons and ligaments you use limber.
Due to the extensive number of muscles you use during the approach, bowls provides a good full-body work-out, while the social aspect boosts psychological and emotional health.
Bowls is primarily an anaerobic type of physical exercise similar to walking with free weights, because you are not giving your cardiovascular system a workout. The flexing and stretching in bowls works tendons, joints, ligaments and muscles in the arms and promotes weight loss.
The sport of bowls also involves elements of problem-solving skills which exercise your mind as you try to outwit your opponent, and helps improve co-ordination and concentration.
All of this means that, during an average game, you will:
. Bend 42 times.
. Use a total of 134 muscles.
. Walk approximately 1,260 metres.
· Swing your arm more than 40 times to deliver a bowl weighing more than three pounds.
. Burn roughly 240 calories an hour.
